If you realise before starting your car, the most important thing is to avoid turning the engine on, which will circulate the wrong fuel into the system and potentially damage the engine. But if you have turned the engine on, don’t panic. The chance of any long-term damage to your vehicle is small. Put the car in neutral, remove the keys, get to a safe place and call Wrong Fuel Rescue. Let the filling station know a technician is on the way and ask for help to push your car to a safe place.
If you realise the mistake after you’ve driven away, again, don’t panic. Park somewhere safe, put the car in neutral, remove the keys, put on your hazard lights, and call Wrong Fuel Rescue.
Breakdown companies don’t usually cover the cost of incorrect fueling.
Petrol engines use spark plugs to ignite the fuel and cause combustion. If there’s diesel in the system, it will coat the spark plugs and clog up the fuel system. As a result, it might fail to start, misfire, give off smoke or cut out.
Putting diesel into a petrol car rarely causes severe or permanent damage. But to make it quick and easy for our technicians to drain your fuel system, you still want to avoid diesel circulating the engine. So, it’s best to get the diesel out as soon as possible to avoid expensive engine cleaning costs .
If you recently refuelled and can’t remember which fuel you put into your diesel car, these are some of the signs you might notice.
Diesel engines use fuel as a lubricant in a compressed air system to ensure engine parts run smoothly. On the other hand, petrol increases friction between components, which is bad news for your diesel engine. Petrol also acts as a solvent, dissolving any lubricant (diesel) in the system, so even a small amount can be a problem.
The more petrol pumped through a diesel system; the more damage takes place. As a result, putting petrol into a diesel car is worse than the other way around and can cause expensive damage to your engine. But it’s worth noting that many modern diesel cars have a default safety mechanism that stops the vehicle from running for too long when petrol is in the system.
For most Wrong Fuel Rescue callouts, we drain the fuel, flush the system, and you are back on the road in less than an hour, with no long-term damage.
The damage is potentially more widespread if you’ve driven your car, especially when you’ve added petrol to a diesel system. In that case, you may need to replace parts such as the fuel pump, injectors and fuel lines or the whole fuel tank in more severe cases. You may need a new engine in the worst but thankfully rare case.
A petrol car with diesel added may require extensive cleaning to remove the diesel oil from the system.
Prompt attention by wrong fuel rescue can often avoid these issues.
If you recently refueled and can’t remember which fuel you put into your petrol car, these are some of the signs you might notice.
Your car won’t run on the wrong fuel. It may or may not start, but if it does, it won’t run for long. Diesel and petrol engines work differently, with petrol engines using spark plugs to ignite the fuel and diesel engines using fuel as a lubricant.
It’s more common for petrol to have accidentally been added to a diesel vehicle, as petrol nozzles can easily fit into diesel filter necks. But whichever type of fuel contamination has taken place, the wrong fuel needs to be removed and the system flushed to get you back on the road. In more rare cases, damage to the engine or its component parts may need attention.
If something else, such as water or AdBlue, has made its way into your tank, there will be different problems that our specialist team and equipment can solve.

Luckily the lady in the garage gave me a card for Fuel Doctor. I'm so glad she did. As people had come up to me on the forecourt assuring me it would be fine for me to drive. I had put petrol in diesel car. After googling advice I called the number on Fuel Doctor. Arrived in no time and my car was soon sorted and ready for a fair drive to Cambridge and back later in the day. It was so good to have peace of mind knowing my car wasn't damaged and I wouldn't be breaking down on a busy road. I'd advise anyone to use Fuel Doctor rather than chancing it and ruining a good car. I'm so pleased the cashier had given me the number and I have already been telling my friends. You think you would never put the wrong Fuel in but it was so easily done. My advice would be don't risk it call the professionals out who can sort it and prevent any long term damage to your engine.
